Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe Urges Government to Acknowledge Palestinian Sovereignty

Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe has issued a compelling call to the Australian Government, urging the recognition of the State of Palestine's sovereignty over territories that have been under illegal Israeli occupation since 1967. In her address to the Australian Senate, Senator Thorpe emphasized the need for both domestic and international acknowledgment of Palestinian rights.

Thorpe asserted, "This government must extend its recognition to encompass both foreign and domestic sovereignty. It is imperative to acknowledge the Palestinian people's rightful sovereignty over all lands taken since 1967, and concurrently, impel the Israeli government to put an end to its illegal occupation."

Notably, Senator Thorpe commended the recent shift in Australia's official discourse, which now acknowledges the illegality of the Palestinian territory's occupation under international law. Encouraging further adherence to this truth-driven trajectory, she urged the government to persist in this direction.

Expressing her condemnation of the entrenched violent occupation and the consequent suffering of Palestinians, Thorpe castigated the Israeli state for perpetuating this troubling state of affairs.

"In the year 2022 alone," the Australian Senator recounted, "Israeli forces claimed the lives of over 170 Palestinians, tragically including 53 children. Regrettably, as we ushered in 2023, we witnessed the loss of 160 lives, among them 35 children. Shockingly, just a mere four days ago, three more lives were unjustly taken."

With empathy born from personal experiences, Thorpe drew a parallel between the slow yet persistent violence endured by Palestinian communities and the challenges faced by her own nation. She raised poignant points regarding apartheid and the struggle against forces that fail to recognize basic truths.

"Remarkably," she highlighted, "close to 140 nations, including even the Vatican, have granted recognition to Palestine as a sovereign state. Strikingly, Australia remains an exception to this norm. The shared reluctance of colonial powers to extend recognition—both within their borders and beyond—underscores a troubling pattern."

In her address, Senator Thorpe captured the essence of a pressing international concern, urging Australia to contribute to a broader global consensus by endorsing the rightful sovereignty of the State of Palestine and thereby participating in efforts towards a just and lasting resolution.
