The League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine is following with deep concern the serious deterioration in the health condition of the member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Mohammad Jamal Al-Natsheh, who is detained in Israeli occupation prisons, after being subjected to brutal torture during his interrogation.
According to prisoner organizations and human rights media outlets, MP Al-Natsheh was transferred just a few days after his arrest from "Ofer" prison to "Hadassah" hospital in critical condition as a result of a brain hemorrhage, kidney failure, and falling into a complete coma, before being moved to Ramleh prison hospital, where he is currently in a shocking state that reflects the extent of the violations he suffered during the interrogation period.
The League strongly condemns the occupation authorities’ refusal to allow MP Al-Natsheh’s lawyer to meet with him, considering this behavior an additional crime that falls within a systematic policy to prevent legal and medical oversight of the grave violations suffered by detainees.
The serious health condition of MP Al-Natsheh clearly indicates that he was subjected to systematic torture amounting to a slow assassination attempt, in blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, especially the Fourth Convention relating to the protection of civilians in time of war, which obliges the occupying power to provide protection and medical care to detainees.
The league affirms that the case of MP Al-Natsheh is not an exception, but rather part of a broader approach affecting hundreds of Palestinian detainees who are subjected to torture and deprivation of legal and medical visits, with the aim of extracting confessions under duress.
The league holds the occupation authorities fully responsible for the life of MP Mohammad Al-Natsheh, and calls on the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations, and especially the relevant Special Rapporteurs on human rights, to intervene urgently and immediately to reveal his fate and conditions of detention, and to ensure the provision of necessary medical care.
We call on all parliaments and international human rights institutions to take serious action and put an end to these criminal practices against representatives of the Palestinian people.
We affirm that the continued repression of members of the Legislative Council by the occupation reflects a systematic targeting of Palestinian political representation and undermines any just political process.
