For the first time.. The United Nations commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba

The United Nations has decided to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba with an official ceremony on Monday at the headquarters of the international body in New York City for the first time since 1948.

In accordance with the mandate given by the UN General Assembly, by a resolution issued on November 30, 2022, the 75th anniversary of the Nakba will be commemorated by organizing two events at the UN headquarters.

The General Assembly voted on a pro-Palestinian resolution to commemorate the Nakba at the United Nations, by 90 votes to 30 against, while 47 countries abstained from voting on the initiative.

The resolution requests the division for Palestinian rights of the secretariat-general to dedicate its activities in 2023 to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Nakba, including holding a high-level official event in the General Assembly Hall on May 15.

"This anniversary highlights the longest growing refugee crisis in the world and is a reminder that more than 5.9 million Palestine refugees registered with UNRWA are still living amid conflict, violence and occupation, and are looking forward to a just and lasting solution to their plight," the organization said in a statement.

"The UN Committee on the exercise of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, with the assistance of the division for Palestinian rights of the Department of political affairs and peacebuilding, will commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Nakba at UN headquarters in New York,"she added.

"For the first time in the history of the United Nations, and in accordance with the mandate given by the UN General Assembly (resolution A / RES / 77/23 of November 30, 2022), this anniversary will be celebrated by organizing two events at UN headquarters, co-organized by the committee and the permanent observer mission of Palestine to the United Nations,"the statement continued.

All UN members and observers were invited to attend the two events, as well as intergovernmental and civil society organizations, as well as the public, according to a statement posted on the UN website.
