A group of British Members of Parliament have called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to conduct an independent investigation into Britain’s involvement in the Israeli aggression on Gaza, and have urged the disclosure of all information regarding the extent of this British involvement.
MP Jeremy Corbyn submitted an official petition to the Prime Minister, signed by more than 25 British parliamentarians, demanding an investigation similar to the “Chilcot Inquiry” into Britain’s invasion of Iraq.
The signatories to the petition affirmed that Britain played a pivotal role in the Israeli aggression on Gaza through its comprehensive support for Israel, such as arms sales, providing intelligence, and the use of British military bases.
The British MPs who signed the petition stressed the need for transparency and accountability in this investigation, and for the disclosure of government decisions related to supporting the Israeli occupation since October 2023.
The official petition was signed by former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, MP Richard Burgon, Brian Leishman, Diane Abbott, Zarah Sultana, and a number of members from the Scottish National Party and the Green Party.
Meanwhile, Mark Smith, a former official at the British Foreign Office, revealed behaviors that go beyond limits to complicity in war crimes, accusing the government of silencing officials who object to its policies, intimidating them to prevent them from speaking out, and manipulating official procedures to achieve specific political outcomes, while submitted reports are being dismissed.
The petition also revealed the use of British military bases in Cyprus to supply the Israeli occupation with weapons and intelligence, with Britain, as a third party, playing a significant role in the war, leading to its involvement in acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.
