Malaysia today condemned the attack by the Israeli forces against the Palestinians inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque which took place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia stood in solidarity with the people of Palestine and reiterated the status of Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the holy site of the Muslim community.

Anwar also called upon the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to hold the Israeli regime accountable and responsible for the attack, which he described as a heinous crime.

"The international community must demand the Israeli regime to immediately stop any provocative acts in the interest of peace," said Anwar in a series of social media postings on his Twitter account.

In a separate statement, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the Israeli police's incursion into Al-Aqsa mosque, which always took place when Muslims were observing the fasting month, was irresponsible and despicable.

"The department has called on the global community to unite and condemn such an act by the Israeli regime and demand they cease the attack," he said.

Na'im added that all mosques under the supervision of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) have been instructed to conduct special prayers in solidarity for the Palestinians today.

"We have also asked all mosques and suraus under the purview of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) to do the same.

"In conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan Al-Mubarak, let us pray for the safety and wellbeing of the Palestinians," he said.
