South Africa parliament vote to suspend Israel ties, close embassy

South African MPs have voted in favor of a motion that calls for the closure of the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria and the suspension of diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv. The motion, introduced by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was debated in the National Assembly. A total of 248 lawmakers voted in favor of the motion, while 91 opposed it.

The ruling African National Congress party (ANC), which holds the majority in the National Assembly, supported the motion, leading to its passage. However, the main opposition party, Democratic Alliance (DA), the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), and some other parties voted against it.

ANC chief whip Pemmy Majodina stated that the Israeli Embassy should remain closed until a cease-fire is agreed upon. She emphasized that the ongoing conflict is not a religious war, contrary to some beliefs, and reiterated the need for a peaceful resolution. During the parliamentary session, some lawmakers chanted "Free Free Palestine."

In response to Israel's ongoing assault in Gaza, South Africa recently recalled all its diplomats from Tel Aviv for consultation. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni expressed that genocide under the watch of the international community is unacceptable and emphasized the importance of preventing another human tragedy.

Israel has announced that it will be recalling its ambassador in South Africa for consultations in response to these developments.
