On the first day of Ramadan, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He expressed concern that despite the beginning of Ramadan, the violence and suffering in Gaza persist.

Guterres emphasized the need for all parties involved to honor the spirit of Ramadan by ending the hostilities and removing any obstacles that hinder the delivery of life-saving aid on a large scale and with urgency.

Guterres reiterated his plea for the conflicting parties to put an end to the war, emphasizing the powerful words of the victims' families who recently visited the UN headquarters in New York. Quoting one of the family members, he stated, "We are not here seeking condolences or apologies. We are here demanding immediate action."
