159 Sri Lankan MPs Describe Gaza War as Brutal and Call for Israel's Accountability

159 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament have sent a message to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, strongly condemning the Israeli war on Gaza and describing it as brutal. They demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities.

In their message, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and emphasizing the need for the establishment of an independent state based on the 1967 borders, the Sri Lankan MPs appealed to the United Nations, international governmental and non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations to take necessary steps to compel Israel to halt its attacks and aggression against the Palestinian people.

These parliamentarians described the continuous Israeli assault on Gaza, which has been ongoing for over a month, as brutal. They stated that the killing of thousands of civilians, mostly children and women, and the targeting of hospitals constitute war crimes. They stressed the importance of holding Israel accountable under international laws and humanitarian regulations for these crimes.

Furthermore, they considered Israel's actions in Gaza as a clear and ongoing policy of genocide, indicating that its current actions are a clear indication of its efforts to forcibly displace Palestinian civilians from their homes.

The signatories of the message urged the three Western permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (the United States, the United Kingdom, and France) to cease their support for Israel and to impartially uphold international law without hypocrisy or double standards.
