Turkish President Erdogan Urges Immediate Cease-fire in Palestine-Israel Conflict

Turkish President Erdogan called on all parties involved in the Palestine-Israel war to de-escalate tensions and cease hostilities, emphasizing the need for an immediate cease-fire. Speaking at the parliamentary group meeting of the Justice and Development (AK) Party in Ankara, Erdogan revealed that he had planned to visit Israel before the conflict erupted on October 7 but decided to cancel his trip.

While affirming that Turkey does not have issues with the Israeli state, Erdogan firmly stated that his country would never condone any acts of atrocity. He expressed concern over the high number of child casualties resulting from Israeli attacks in Gaza, suggesting a deliberate intent to commit crimes against humanity. Erdogan criticized the hypocrisy of those who remained silent about the Gaza massacre after standing up against Russia's actions in Ukraine.

Accusing countries outside the region of exacerbating the conflict under the guise of supporting Israel, Erdogan predicted that the United States would ultimately lose due to its reluctance to promote fair governance on a global scale. He expressed deep disappointment in the UN's apparent helplessness and lack of serious action in response to the brutal killing of children, highlighting Turkey's ongoing objections to the unfair structure of the UN Security Council.

Reiterating his stance on UN reform, Erdogan emphasized the need to recognize that "the world is bigger than five," referring to the unrepresentative nature of the Security Council's five permanent members with veto power. He also emphasized Turkey's historical stance against antisemitism, stating that the Jewish people are aware of the country's long-standing record in this regard.

The conflict in Gaza, which began on October 7, was triggered by Hamas' Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, an unexpected multifaceted attack involving rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel via land, sea, and air. Hamas claimed that these actions were in response to the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and escalating violence by Israeli settlers. In response, the Israeli military launched an extensive air campaign against the Gaza Strip.

The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life, with approximately 5,791 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis killed. The people of Gaza, numbering 2.3 million, are facing severe shortages of food, water, medicines, and fuel. Despite aid convoys being allowed into Gaza, the supplies provided are far from meeting the region's urgent needs.

Actions must accompany words on Palestine

Actions must accompany words on Palestine

The failure to end Israel’s occupation of Palestine and secure Palestinian peace and freedom is “a profound stain” against the mission and objectives of the United Nations, said South African Minister of International Relations, Naledi Pandor, at the UN Security Council on Monday. As South Africa entered its final week as president of the Security Council, Pandor was in New York to preside...
