LP4Q&P Appreciates the Colombian President's Decision to Halt Coal Exports to the Occupation

The League of Parliamentarians for al-Quds and Palestine praised the positions of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who has rejected the Israeli genocide against Gaza, most recently by stopping coal exports to the Israeli occupation.

In a letter addressed to President Petro, the League welcomed his steadfast commitment to honorable, historical, and clear positions regarding the Palestinian cause, particularly his stance on the genocide being perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The League affirmed that the position of the Republic of Colombia towards the Palestinian cause—by its parliament, government, and people—is widely respected and aligns with international law and United Nations resolutions concerning the Palestinian issue.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that his country will halt coal exports to Israel while the war on Gaza continues.

In a tweet on the platform X, Petro wrote, "We will stop our coal exports to Israel until the genocide stops."

A decree issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated that the halt on coal exports will remain in effect "until full compliance with the temporary measures ordered by the International Court of Justice in the context of applying the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in Gaza."

In May, President Petro announced the severing of diplomatic relations between his country and the occupation, describing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government as committing genocide against the Palestinians. He also halted purchases of Israeli-made weapons.
